Guard may be at airport by Friday

By Howard Wilkinson
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is likely to get most of the 35 Kentucky National Guardsmen being deployed to the state's airports.

And when the Guardsmen get there — as early as Friday — they will be noticed by anyone with an airline ticket who passes through the security checkpoints.

Lt. Col. Phil Miller, a spokesman for the Kentucky National Guard, said armed guard members in camouflage will be stationed just beyond the security checkpoints, where passengers pass through metal detectors and undergo searches.

“They are going to be there to assist,” Col. Miller said. “They'll monitor the scanning and give any aid to the airport security folks that they need.”

The Guard members at airports around the country are expected to be on duty for four to six months.

Col. Miller said the 35 Kentucky guardsmen would be allotted to five airports in Kentucky based on the volume of traffic that passes through them.

The airports in Louisville, Lexington, Paducah and Owensboro are dwarfed by the size of Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, the 16th-busiest airport in the nation.

The 100 Ohio National Guard troops being called for duty will cover airports in Columbus, Cleveland, Dayton, Toledo, Youngstown and Akron-Canton.

They will come exclusively from military police units stationed in Middletown and Youngstown.

The troops being stationed at airports are being called to duty by governors in response to a request from President Bush to activate Guardsmen for airport security.

In addition, the Defense Department is activating more Ohio and Kentucky units for service in Operation Noble Eagle, the homeland defense effort, and Operation Enduring Freedom, the war on terrorism.

Tuesday, two military police companies of the Ohio Army National Guard — the 135th in Brook Park and the 323rd in Toledo — were ordered to mobilize Oct. 9 and deploy to Fort Bragg, N.C., for future operations.

Also ordered to deploy to Fort Bragg was Company A, 1st Battalion, 149th Infantry, a unit based in Harlan, Ky. Headquarters Company, 198th Military Police Battalion, based in Louisville, was also activated to Fort Bragg.

A 117-member military police company in Akron on Tuesday became the first Ohio Army Reserve unit to be called to active duty. Also activated was the 26-member Air Force Reserve Security Forces Squadron in Youngstown.
