Two area officers picked for award
They helped man obtain free prosthesis
By Jane Prendergast
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Two Cincinnati police officers will be honored in Washington, D.C. for helping a one-legged African refugee get a free prosthesis.
Sgt. Brian Ibold and Officer Joe Lorenz were among more than 250 officers from across the country nominated for the National Association of Police Organizations' Top Cops Awards. Chief Tom Streicher suggested their good deed be nominated after the Enquirer featured it in an April story.
The officers met Yahwietor Mok in Over-the-Rhine, where they formerly worked nights. They'd see him beaten up and drinking. They thought maybe the Sudanese man could get a better place to live and a job if he could get around better.
They convinced Clifton prosthetist John Benson to help Mr. Mok. He produced a new right leg, which could have cost Mr. Mok as much as $12,000.
For awhile, Mr. Mok was doing better. He was in rehab in Covington, read the Bible and spoke to school students about Africa. But he has since relapsed.
The officers are disappointed that their help didn't last longer, Sgt. Ibold said. But they're still keeping track of him.
Sgt. Ibold and Officer Lorenz will be honored for their nominations Oct. 24. Celebrities such as Dennis Franz of NYPD Blue, plus others who play cops and lawyers on TV, hand out the awards.
