Columbus was the only Ohio city to add immigrants at a faster pace than Cincinnati over a seven-year period in the 1990s, according to a new study released Wednesday.

        The number of Cincinnati immigrants jumped 30.6 percent from 1991 to 1998. Despite the large percentage increase, foreign-born residents still make up just 1.5 percent of Greater Cincinnati's population.

        Cincinnati's largest groups of immigrants came from Russia, followed by India, China and Vietnam.

        “The South and Midwest are attractive because they have lower or moderate cost of living and strong job markets,” said Steven Camarota, research director of Washington D.C.-based Center for Immigration Studies, a group critical of U.S. immigration policy.

        Nashville had the fastest rate of immigration growth among major cities. Louisville had the third fastest growth and Indianapolis ranked No. 12. Youngstown attracted the fewest immigrants.

        Mr. Camarota said the last decade represented a change from the past, when immigrants rarely settled outside major coastal cities such as New York, Miami, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
