County auction begins
By Dan Klepal
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Need a computer? Refrigerator? Football helmet?
Hamilton County can help.
The county is holding its annual auction of obsolete equipment today and Saturday and will be selling 3,000-square-feet of stuff on the cheap.
That stuff includes things one would expect computers, desks, filing cabinets and more unusual items such as pallets of ceramic molds, weed-eaters and shoulder pads.

IF YOU GO

What: Hamilton County obsolete equipment auction.
When: Today and Saturday. Bidding starts at 10 a.m. each day.
Where: 840 West Fifth Street (the old Hudepohl Brewing warehouse).
|
Amy Hoh, purchasing director for the county, said there is no way to try out equipment before buying. Some computers will be set up as systems, and there will be pallets of miscellaneous items.
You take a chance when you buy it, Ms. Hoh said. But last year the highest anyone paid for a computer was $125, and that had a Pentium (processor).
Toward the end of the day, pallets of miscellaneous parts were going for $40, she said.
There will be about 450 computers up for sale. Buyers must take the merchandise they buy, or make arrangements to have it stored. All sales are final.
The auction will be at 840 West Fifth St., the old Hudepohl Brewing warehouse.
The auction is required by state law. The county must try to auction its property before disposing of it. Last year the auction raised $11,000 for the county.
Doors open at 9 a.m. both days, and the bids start flying at 10 a.m. The auction will last until 2 p.m. today, and until the last chair is sold on Saturday.
We'll be there until 6 (p.m.) if we have to be, Ms. Hoh said.
Gene Simpkins, of All American Auctions, will oversee the festivities. Only cash and checks will be accepted as payment.
