Campbell County runners upset elite pair
Brossart captures small-school titles

TAYLOR MILL Coach Terri Mayhew thought her Campbell County girls team would be tired Saturday.
She could not have been more wrong.
The Camels upset state Class AAA No.1 Scott 41-50 in the large-school division of the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference meet at Scott.
Not only did Campbell County knock off Scott, but the Camels also ran past state No.3 Notre Dame.
I guess I underestimated them, Mayhew said. We had four girls in the top 10.
Camels freshman Sara Hater won the race, followed by freshman Heidi Rawe in sixth place, junior Erin Bunting in seventh, freshman Kristin Geiger in ninth and junior Meggy Rawe in 17th.
Notre Dame senior Meghan Crowe finished second overall.
Bishop Brossart swept the small-school team titles. The boys defeated St. Henry 25-44, and the girls beat Lloyd Memorial 28-56.
The two-time defending Class A state champion Brossart boys are ranked first in Class A this year, too. Saturday's race showed why: Seniors Tim Kaiser and Paul Mar kus finished 1-2; sophomore Joey Heil was fifth; senior Ian McDole was seventh; and senior Zac Dietrich took 10th.
It's pretty much the same varsity (from last year), Kaiser said. Everyone's battling for position.
Brossart's girls are third in the state behind Hancock County and St. Henry. But nobody has more fun than the Mustangs each runner paints her left eyebrow green, and the team T-shirts bear the slogan It must be the Schuh, a reference to coach Dave Schuh.
Schuh, meanwhile, talked about junior Tricia Brun, who finished second behind St. Henry senior Chrissy Cummings.
She's usually been our fifth or sixth runner, Schuh said.
Cummings benefited from an early-race navigational mistake by some other runners.
I was seventh or eighth, Cummings said. Some of the girls went the wrong way. Celia (Brossart senior Celia Dischar) and I went the right way.
Scott's boys had the closest race all day. The Eagles edged Highlands 60-63. Covington Catholic finished third with 72 points, and CovCath senior Chris Davis won the race.
They wanted to do well on their last race on their home course, Scott coach Jerry Mohr said.
