Meet the 16 contestants
Survivor: Africa players have been divided into two tribes, Samburu and Boran, named after actual African tribes.
The Samburu tribe
Carl Bilancione, 46, a dentist from Winter Springs, Fla., has competed in six marathons. The former Brooklyn resident loves to photograph the New York Yankees and Orlando Magic. Luxury item: Toothbrush and toothpaste.
Teresa Cooper, 42, a flight attendant from Jackson, Ga., lives on a 161-acre farm with her husband and two children. She also is a real estate agent and works full-time as a recruiter and sales representative for a cosmetics company. The former aerobics instructor also is a marathon runner. Luxury item: Lucky bullet necklace.
Silas Gaither, 23, a Los Angeles bartender from Germantown, Tenn., wants to be an actor. He was the boxing champion in his weight class for three years while studying finance at the University of Tennessee. He loves kayaking, backpacking and fly-fishing. Luxury item: Pillow.
Frank Garrison, 43, a telephone technician from Odessa, N.Y., served as a non-commissioned officer with the U.S. Army 24th Infantry Division. The National Rifle Association member loves to hunt and fish. He and his wife are expecting a third daughter. Luxury item: Whitetail antlers.
Kim Powers, 29, a free-lance marketer from Conshohocken, Pa., works for an athletic wear company near Philadelphia. Her favorite hobbies are running, biking, boxing, cooking and growing herbs and vegetables. Luxury item: String necklace.
Brandon Quinton, 25, a Dallas bartender born in Ada, Okla., has worked as a department store make-up artist. Although gay, he was married to a woman during college. His hobbies are playing tennis, running and smoking. Luxury item: Chap Stick.
Lindsey Richter, 27, an advertising account executive from Portland, Ore., spent a year as marketing director for an Australian pro baseball team. She has competed on the mountain bike racing circuit. She also enjoys boxing, snowboarding and riding horses. Luxury item: Beach ball.
Linda Spencer, 44, a thyroid cancer survivor and a Harvard University career counselor from Cambridge, Mass., climbed Mount Rainier after being diagnosed with cancer. She has traveled to 28 countries on four continents and spent two summers in African villages with no electricity or running water. The mother of two also likes ice climbing, mountain climbing and yoga. Luxury item: Aromatherapy ball.
The Boran tribe
@colText: Clarence Black, 24, a high school basketball coach from Detroit, has worked as a stockbroker and financial planner. He describes himself as competitive, loyal and silly. Luxury item: Army camouflage paints.
Tom Buchanan, 46, is a third-generation goat and cattle farmer from Rich Valley, Va. His hobbies include softball, fishing, bird hunting and motorcycle riding. He and his wife have a son attending Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Ky. Luxury item: Lucky charm.
Jessie Camancho, 27, a deputy sheriff and former model from Orlando, Fla., was named Miss Puerto Rico, Orlando at age 16. The University of Central Florida junior enjoys kickboxing, skating, mountain biking and dancing. The former theme park security guard also collects animated movies. Luxury item: A necklace from her grandmother.
Kelly Goldsmith, 22, a behavioral research analyst from Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., was social and rush chair of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at Duke University. The former high school cheerleader and homecoming queen has been a researcher for a cosmetics company and a Web site. Her hobbies include lifting weights, crocheting and manipulating men. Luxury item: Crochet needles and yarn.
Kim Johnson, 57, a retired elementary school teacher from Oyster Bay, N.Y., was born in Cleveland. The U.S. Tennis Association member also has owned a sportswear boutique. She enjoys running, tennis, camping, hiking, fishing and horseback riding. The grandmother of two calls herself nutty, logical and determined. Luxury item: paints and brush.
Diane Ogden, 42, a mail carrier from Lincoln, Neb., has worked as a nurse's aide and a carhop waitress. Her hobbies include jewelry making, home improvement and swimming. Twiced divorced, Ms. Ogden has a daughter and a son. Luxury item: Journal and pen.
Lex van den Berghe, 38, a tattoo-covered Internet marketing manager from Santa Cruz, Calif., has traveled extensively in Kenya, Japan, Israel and Europe. His hobbies include surfing, fishing and playing drums with a band called Luckydog. He and his wife have two sons. Luxury item: His son's baby high-tops.
Ethan Zohn, 27, a professional soccer player from Lexington, Mass., has a biology degree from Vassar College. He has played soccer for the U.S. National Maccabiah Team and teams in Zimbabwe; Cape Cod, Mass.; and Oahu, Hawaii. The vegetarian enjoys running, cooking and scuba diving. Luxury item: Hacky sack.
