Thanksgiving run course changes
Start, end: Paul Brown Stadium
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Thanksgiving Day Race is forsaking tradition for convenience. The 92nd version of the race will begin and end at Paul Brown Stadium. The previous 91 races began in Northern Kentucky and finished in downtown Cincinnati.
With the race growing, that became a logistical pain in the neck. We didn't have enough buses to handle it, race director Julie Isphording said. We didn't have any shelter (at the starting line). We think we can grow this race to 10,000 people.
The 10-kilometer race will start and end on Second Street outside PBS, but runners will be allowed on the concourses and in the stands before the race. People will be able to stay warm before the race, Isphording said. They'll also be able to park free. It will be no problem to zip down there and run.
Having the same start and finish line allows the use of chip timing. That's the technology used for the Flying Pig Marathon. Each runner will attach a tiny chip device to a shoelace to record net time. For a back-of-the-packer, the chip will only start timing when the start line is crossed.
An effort was made to retain portions of the old course. It will go into both Newport and Covington.
