UC faculty calls for mediation
By Ben L. Kaufman

The faculty union declared an impasse Friday in contract negotiations with the University of Cincinnati and called for mediation.
A federal mediator helped the union and UC reach new three-year contracts in both 1995 and 1998.
Mathematics Professor Joe W. Fisher, president of the AAUP, said Nothing was happening at the table. It was clear they were not going to increase their economic package. We were just wasting time.
AAUP must deliver formal written notice of the impasse to UC President Joseph A. Steger. That starts the joint selection process of a mediator.
AAUP and UC have been bargaining sporadically for about three months; the contract expired Aug. 31. The impasse involves pay and health benefits.
Our intent in the negotiations had been to reach a contract and if it takes mediation to achieve a contract we are willing to go into mediation, UC spokesman Greg Hand said.
