Lemon Monroe fifth in state golf tourney

        The Lemon Monroe boys golf team is four strokes off the lead after the first day of the Division II state golf meet over the Gray Course at Ohio State University in Columbus.

        A 3-over-par 74 by senior Matt Waidmann paced the Hornets. Junior Chris Hunt and freshman Aaron Crist were close behind with 76s. Monroe is in a three-way tie for fifth place.

        Chillicothe Unioto holds a one-stroke lead at 301 over Lima Senior, followed by Sandusky Perkins (303) and Orville (304).

        New Richmond senior Justin Fender was one of two golfers to break par, firing a 1-under 70, one stroke behind J.D. Shonhoft from Canton Central Catholic in the race for medalist honors.

        Defending Division III state champion Warren John F. Kennedy took a commanding eight-stroke lead over Gahanna Columbus with Summit Country Day in fifth place at 337.

        Summit senior Wes Homan remains in contention for medalist honors with a 75 over the Scarlet Course. Homan is three strokes behind Jason Kokrak from Warren JFK.

        Rain or shine, the final 18 holes will be played today beginning at 8 a.m.
