Man, 85, charged in stepson's death
The Associated Press

CALHOUN — State police arrested an 85-year-old man early Saturday morning and charged him in the shooting death of his stepson.

Hugh F. Wells, of Calhoun, was charged with murder. Police said he shot his stepson and caretaker, 50-year-old Gerald Humphrey, around 4:43 a.m. CST with a shotgun as Mr. Humphrey slept.

A Mclean County Sheriff's Deputy apprehended Mr. Wells near his home without incident, state police said. Mr. Wells was jailed in the Ohio County Detention Center.

Police investigate abuse of 8-year-old
The Associated Press

LOUISVILLE — Police are investigating an allegation that an 8-year-old girl was sexually abused in a taxicab, police and Jefferson County public school officials said.

The officials said the abuse is alleged to have occurred about 3 p.m. Wednesday, when a Yellow Cab driver left the girl and a 22-year-old man alone in the car.

The driver had gone into an elementary school to pick up another student, school officials said.

“The cab driver was contracted to shuttle certain people from place to place. However, he is only supposed to take one person at a time,” said Detective Bill Keeling, a Louisville police spokesman.

The girl's mother had arranged for the transport, which the girl took once or twice a month to medical appointments, said Gutermuth Elementary principal William Patterson.

Police said the child's parent called them to report sexual abuse.

Because the investigation involves a juvenile, police could give no further details.

The Louisville-Jefferson County Crimes Against Children Unit is handling the case.

Husband charged in psychologist's death
The Associated Press

CARTERSVILLE — A psychologist for the Rockcastle County school system was found beaten to death in her home, and Kentucky State Police have charged her husband with murder.

Kenna C. Lanham, 47, was found dead on Thursday at the couple's home in southern Garrard County, state police said.

Police charged Phillip Lanham, 45, with first-degree murder and held him in the Lincoln County jail.

State police said in a news release that a domestic dispute occurred at the Lanhams' home. An arrest report said that Phillip Lanham beat his wife to death, put her in a bed and then cleaned the home.

Rockcastle County Superintendent Larry Hammond said Ms. Lanham, an Eastern Kentucky University graduate, had worked in the 2,850-student school district for nearly 13 years.

Man found guilty of killing girlfriend
The Associated Press

SHEPHERDSVILLE — A Bullitt County jury on Friday found a man guilty of murdering his pregnant girlfriend.

Frank Harbin Jr., 25, was sentenced to life in prison. He admitted to fatally stabbing Kimberly J. Krebs, 22.

Ms. Krebs was found Nov. 11, 1999, at Mr. Harbin's mother's trailer home in Shepherdsville, where Ms. Krebs was living. She suffered more than 20 stab wounds.

Mr. Harbin was seeking an acquittal by reason of insanity or extreme emotional distress. The jury deliberated 10 hours before returning his conviction.

Mr. Harbin was arrested the day after Ms. Krebs' body was found after a high-speed chase in Elizabethtown that ended when he crashed into a police cruiser.

Madison courthouse evacuated by scare
The Associated Press

RICHMOND — The Madison County Courthouse was evacuated and eight employees were decontaminated as a precautionary measure Friday after a powdery white substance was found in a letter, officials said.

The courthouse was evacuated about 2 p.m. EDT and remained closed Friday afternoon.

“No one has shown any signs or symptoms at this time, but we must take steps to protect the employees,” said Jesse Cain, Madison County Emergency Management Agency director.

The letter was sent from a Connecticut bank and mortgage company and addressed to Mary Jane Ginter, the county clerk, Mr. Cain said.

The letter was opened in Ms. Ginter's office, but county Judge-Executive Kent Clark would not say whether she was the person who opened it.

The substance spilled out of the envelope, Mr. Clark said, prompting his call to police.

Ms. Ginter and seven other employees were taken to Pattie A. Clay Hospital for blood tests after decontamination showers, said Sheriff Cecil Cochran.

The substance was taken to the University of Kentucky to be tested. Results are expected within two days.

“With everything going on in the country now, we treat everything as a major incident,” Mr. Cain said.

Mr. Clark said the courthouse would reopen on Monday.
