Boys cross country roundup

La Salle edges St. Xavier for GCL title

For the second time in three years, the LaSalle Lancers took home the Greater Catholic League title at Rapid Run Park, beating second-place St.Xavier 23-35.

LaSalle was led by Allen Bader, who ran a new GCL-record time of 15:09 on the 3.1-mile course. LaSalle placed five runners in the top 10, St.Xavier four in the top 10.

“St.Xavier is a great team, finishing 1-2-1 the last three years in the state meet,” La Salle coach Frank Russo said. “This race was a battle from beginning to end and literally wasn't decided until the very end of the race.”

The rivalry between La Salle and St. Xavier has grown over the past several years, with the teams trading places over the past four years in the league results.

“We thought Bader setting the league record would be a great way for him to go out,” Russo said. “He ran within himself and wasn't pressing.”

In the North division, McNicholas pulled away with its second straight league title as Josh Kellerman led the way with a time of 16:17 and Drew Rothmeller finished third in 16:52.

Roger Bacon finished second with 67 points, led by a second-place finish by Alex Folz (16:44) and an eighth-place finish by Nate Wagner (17:54).

In the Southern Buckeye Conference league meet, Hillsboro won its seventh league meet in the past eight years. Tony Pickering led the way with a second-place finish in 17:02. Josh Lane of Bethel-Tate took runner of the year honors with a first-place finish in 16:40.

The FAVC Buckeye boys race had a tight finish, with Harrison beating Anderson 72-80.

The difference was Harrison placing Allen Koehler, Bradley Jonas, Adam Becker and Dave Kleiner in the top 10. Anderson's Brandon Andrews won the race in 17:34.

In the Cardinal Division, Kings easily beat Ross with a score of 17-62. Kings had the top four runners in the race, with Taylor Garvin winning it in 16:51.

In the Greater Miami Conference, Sycamore beat out Middletown and Fairfield to claim the league crown. Sycamore was led by Tom Gallagher's fifth-place finish (17:00) and Brad Nuemann's sixth-place finish (17:02).

Jeff See of Middletown won the race in 16:31, with Fairfield's John Dixon coming in second in 16:43.
