LSU 29, Kentucky 25

Lorenzen-led comeback goes for naught

The Associated Press

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Jared Lorenzen, who lost the starting QB job three weeks ago, came off the bench to lead two second-half scores for Kentucky. But Rohan Davey connected with freshman Michael Clayton on a 6-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds remaining to give LSU a 29-25 victory on Saturday night.

Thanks to the former Highlands High star, the Wildcats (1-5, 0-4) were on the verge of their first conference victory since 1999. But LSU marched 80 yards over the final three minutes as Kentucky lost its fourth straight game overall and its 13th consecutive SEC contest.

Lorenzen entered the game late in the third quarter and threw 31- and 23-yard touchdown passes to put the Wildcats on top 25-22 with 3:18 to play.

Lorenzen, a sophomore who has played behind redshirt freshman Shane Boyd despite setting six NCAA freshman passing records last season, finished 6-of-11 for 146 yards and rushed five times for another 28 yards.

Boyd was 17-of-31 for 140 yards with two interceptions and scored on a 13-yard run.

Davey threw for 383 yards and two touchdowns and LaBrandon Toefield rushed 28 times for 129 yards and a 34-yard score to help the Tigers (3-2, 2-1 Southeastern) snap a two-game losing streak.

The Tigers scored on their first two possessions — a 34-yard run by Toefield and a 34-yard field goal by Corbello — and got a safety when Kentucky was called for holding in the end zone to take a 12-0 lead after one quarter.

Seth Hanson's 24-yard field goal got Kentucky on the scoreboard with 10:42 to play in the second quarter.

LSU struck back quickly as Davey hit Josh Reed for 49 yards and, three plays later, found Clayton from 9 yards out to increase the margin to 19-3.

The Wildcats took the ensuing kickoff and drove 77 yards, capped by Boyd's 13-yard scamper on a quarterback draw, to pull within 19-10 with 3:23 to play in the half.

Corbello's 46-yard field goal with 1:16 remaining gave the Tigers a 22-10 halftime lead.

Lorenzen entered the game with 6:00 to play in the third quarter. He needed only five plays five plays to move the team 80 yards, finding Aaron Boone for a 31-yard TD to pull the Wildcats to 22-17.

Lorenzen again drove the Wildcats 80 yards on their next possession, hitting Derek Abney across the middle for a 23-yard touchdown with 8:28 to play to set up the dramatic finish.
