Ask The Critic
Cyber chat continues in print
By Polly Campbell
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Some of us have to be dragged, struggling and cursing, into the cyber arena. I, for one, can't think of any good use for instant messaging and would rather look it up at the library than on the Web.
But I enjoyed my first online chat Wednesday, courtesy Cincinnati.Com. For half an hour, I answered reader's questions. I couldn't get to all the questions, and some I didn't answer because I can't think that fast. Here are some I missed:
Question: Can you recommend a non-traditional place to brunch on the weekends?
Answer: I've recommended it many times, but it's worth repeating: The dim sum brunch at Pacific Moon in Montgomery is fabulous. They wheel around carts with an exotic variety of dumplings, stuffed crab claws, noodle dishes, buns and sweet pastries. There are jellyfish and chicken feet, too, but anyone who likes Chinese will find plenty of more accessible treats. 8300 Market Place Lane, 891-0091.
Q: Is there any place open late that serves heart-healthy fare?
A: You're just trying to stump me, but I can answer that:
Carol's on Main, downtown, is open until 1 a.m. on the weekends, and they have several nice salads. like the Noodle Do. They also have a number of vegetarian dishes. 825 Main St., 651-2667.
Alex Chin, owner of the Pacific Moon, has a new place opening downtown Monday called Shanghai Mama that will serve Chinese noodles and other dishes until 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Chinese: That's heart-healthy, right? 126 E. Sixth; 241-7777
Q: Why are there no TV food critics in this town?
A: It would be nearly impossible to stay anonymous if you did your reviews on TV.
Q: Where are your favorite places for quick and inexpensive takeout?
A: Contributor Mary Sanker writes a takeout column for the Wednesday Food page about once a month. She liked Camargo Cooking Co. in Madeira for the deli sandwiches and salads, vegetable side dishes and chicken and fish entrees that take just a quick heating at home. There are also pies and cakes. 7896 Camargo Road, Madeira. 561-4747.
She also thought Mama Vita's in Mariemont was a good idea: The Italian dishes are sold precooked but cold to be warmed once you get home. 7227 Wooster Pike. 561-6000.
