Morning Memo

Hot tips and news to start your business day

Today's Number: 35,000-plus - Miles of track that the nation's largest railroad, Omaha, Neb.-based Union Pacific, operates over 23 states in the western two-thirds of the United States.

Today's Career Advice: Be like a private investigator while looking for ways to boost revenues for your business by analyzing commercials and advertisements — particularly the ones that capture your attention. “Read every good ad you see published, then clip and save it for future reference,” advises Jay Abraham in his book Getting Everything You Can Out of All You've Got. “When you get solicitations in the mail, stop throwing them away. Realize that companies wouldn't keep mailing these solicitations out unless they produced profitable results. Every time something delights and pleases you, write it down.”

Today's Money Tip: About 1,000 companies offer dividend reinvestment plans, or DRIPS. In these plans, you reinvest dividends from the company to buy more stock.

DRIP advantages include increasing the number of shares you own without investing more money; minimizing volatility by adding to your stake at regular intervals; and saving brokerage fees and commissions

        Today's Company: A.F. Kelly & Associates

WIRING AND INSPIRING: Founded in 1998 by Anthony Kelly, this technical consulting company grew by acquiring two firms in 1999: Walsh Enterprise Solutions and Cambridge Digital Media. A.F. Kelly specializes in helping companies get the most from software systems and training employees to understand and embrace new programs.

MIDWEST NETWORK: Based in Covington, A.F. Kelly employs more than 130 people at that location and about 50 associates in its Dayton office. Clients, primarily in the Midwest, include the Department of Defense, Dow Chemical, DaimlerChrysler, First Energy in Pittsburgh and Marconi Communications.

CONTINUED GROWTH: This year the company was again named one of Northern Kentucky's “Emerging 30” companies. That designation acknowledges that a small business has achieved or exceeded 15 percent annual growth.

TECH BOOSTERS: Executives with A.F. Kelly are active promoters of the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati area as a technology mecca.
