Good News: Workers give $129K for relief

        The employees of Omnicare have raised $129,145 for the Liberty Disaster Relief Fund of the American Red Cross.

        Joel F. Gemunder, chief executive officer, said the company has matched the employee contributions.

        The company match money will go to a scholarship fund for the children and other family members of the victims of the World Trade Center attack, as well as children and immediate family members of the fallen firefighters, police and emergency medical professionals.

        A United We Stand campaign to benefit the families of the public safety officers who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks began over the weekend at three local malls.

        The campaign will run through Oct. 31.

        Participating malls are Tri-County, Eastgate and Towne in Middletown.

        Customers may purchase a United We Stand 2002 calendar, featuring images of the American flag, for $10.

        Proceeds will be donated to the EMS Memorial Foundation, Patrolmen's Benefit Association Widows' & Children's Fund, Port Authority Police World Trade Disaster Survivors' Fund, and Uniformed Fire Fighters Association Widows' and Children's Fund.

        Roger Bacon High School students will honor police and firefighters as part of “Make A Difference Day” on Oct. 27.

        The students will deliver flowers and balloons to police and fire stations, along with homemade cookies and a proclamation of appreciation from the students, faculty, staff and alumni.

        For the third straight year, Butler County 4-H youths are holding 4-H Makes a Warm Difference Day.

        They will collect new gloves, mittens, hats and scarves to donate to local charities.

        They will also be collecting barely used coats and sweaters.

        The 4-H members will take donations on Oct. 27 from 9:30 a.m. until noon at the Ohio State University Butler County Extension Office, 1810 Princeton Road.

        Last year, 4-H'ers from across Butler collected 861 winter items.

        The drive is part of the nationwide “Make A Difference Day.”

        The Dine for America program was a success at Lone Star Steakhouse & Saloon Inc. restaurants.

        Jamie Coulter, chief executive officer, said the chain is giving a check for $2,123,593 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund out of donations from Dine for America Day last Thursday at the company's restaurants in 40 states.

        The chain's restaurants that participated were Lone Star Steakhouse & Saloon, Sullivan's Steakhouse and Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steak House.
