897-pounder top pumpkin

The Associated Press

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — A five-year-old record was shattered at the Circleville Pumpkin Show on Wednesday when the winning entry weighed in at 897 pounds.

The huge pumpkin was entered by Buddy Conley of Laurelville in Hocking County.

The previous record, set in 1996, was 628 pounds.

Diane and Tim Geiger of New Holland in Pickaway County thought they had a good shot at winning the weigh-in with their 802-pound pumpkin, but had to settle for second place.

The Pumpkin Show opened Wednesday and continues through Saturday. Visitors can sample a wide variety of pumpkin products, including pumpkin burgers and pumpkin taffy.
