ATHENS, Ohio Another week, another Ben Roethlisberger record and another Miami victory. Roethlisberger threw two of his school-record five touchdown passes in the fourth quarter Saturday as Miami beat rival Ohio 36-24 in a Mid-American Conference game.
The redshirt freshman completed 24 of 37 passes for 322 yards. He tied the TD record set by Sam Ricketts against Akron in 1995.
This came a week after Roethlisberger passed for a school record 399 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown pass a time ran out in the RedHawks' 30-27 win over Akron.
He is the first Miami quarterback to throw for 300 yards in consecutive games and has thrown at least one TD pass in all seven of his starts. He has multiple TD passes in six of those games.
They were blitzing us a lot and taking away the run (in the first half), said Miami coach Terry Hoeppner, I told (offensive coordinator) Shane (Montgomery) at the half, "I don't care if we don't run the ball at all in the second half. Throw it every down if we need to.'
Miami trailed 21-7 near the end of the first half when Roethlisberger hit Eddie Tillitz with an 11-yard TD pass that cut the deficit to 21-14.
I thought the touchdown we scored right before the half was real crucial for us, Hoeppner said.
The win was Miami's fifth straight, its longest streak since 1998. The RedHawks (5-2) are 4-0 in the Mid-American Conference for the first time since 1986. They are tied with Marshall atop the East Division.
Miami hosts Western Michigan at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Miami got off to a slow start Saturday, thanks in large part to the play of Ohio fullback Joe Sherrill, an Anderson grad, who scored two early TDs.
Roethlisberger has now completed 156 of 246 passes for 2,007 yards and 22 touchdowns in seven games.
Michael Larkin (St. Xavier) matched his season total with six catches, including two for touchdowns.
