COLUMBUS A five-stroke deficit going into the final round of the Division I boys tournament was too much for St. Xavier to overcome.
Led by senior Andrew Rindfleisch (75) and sophomores Brian Keating (78) and Bran Blinn (79), the Bombers took second place at 635, eight strokes behind Cleveland St. Ignatius.
Fairfield, No. 1 in the Enquirer's Division I poll, finished 10th at 666, shooting a 336 Saturday to go with the 330 on Friday.
We took some big numbers on certain holes today, Fairfield coach Steve Kessler said. They tried to do things that they weren't capable of doing. We knew we had to put up a number like in the district (310) to have a chance.
Keating, who earned second- team all-state honors as a result of shooting a 156 (78-78), felt the Bombers had a good chance to erase the five-stroke deficit.
Basically, we knew that if every golfer beat the St. I player by one stroke, we could tie them, Keating said. I'm disappointed but we had a good year. We won the (Dick) Hadley, GCL, sectional and district championships.
St. Xavier coach Brian Shircliff offered no excuses.
Every golfer had some bad holes today but we had a great season and I'm very happy, Shircliff said. We had a chance today but give credit to St. Ignatius. They played very well.
