Summit wins on Ononye's kick

By Shannon Russell
The Cincinnati Enquirer

When Summit Country Day's Uchenna Ononye stepped to the 12-yard mark during sudden death of his team's Division III sectional match with Seven Hills, he knew the outcome rested squarely on his shoulders. And the last place Ononye wanted to be was in the spotlight.

“I'm really more of a team player,” the sophomore midfielder said. “I was pretty nervous because I knew the game relied on that shot, and if I missed it I knew we'd lose.”

Ononye, the seventh Silver Knight kicker, booted the ball past Stinger goalkeeper David Shuh and into the right side of the net for the 6-5 advantage.

The ensuing penalty kick by Seven Hills' Chip Kalnow bounced off the crossbars to seal Summit's win, its third this year over the Stingers.

Silver Knights coach Scott Cagle never dreamed Ononye's fifth goal of the year would be the difference Saturday.

“I was worried because he's just a sophomore and he's just coming out of his shell,” Cagle said. “But he hit it solid like he'd done it a hundred times before.”

Seven Hills coach Terry Nicholl could have put his team in an alternate bracket during the sectional pairings to avoid another matchup with its Miami Valley Conference rival, but he said his team wanted one more shot at Summit.

He hoped the return of senior forward Randall Rubinstein, who played on and off all year with an injury, would jump-start his team Saturday. But Rubinstein suffered a game-ending knee strain with 23:41 to go in the second half.

“We never really got back in synch after Randall went off the field,” Nicholl said. “After that we weren't quite as effective.”

Summit Country Day will face Fayetteville Oct.23.

Goals: SCD-Shteiwi, Salzano, Gass, Newton, Petrie, Ononye. SH-Wylie, Carr, Nacev, Barnett, Comisar. Records: SCD 15-1-1, SH 7-9-1.
