Tank maker, union reach deal to end strike
The Associated Press
STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. Striking workers reached a tentative contract Monday at a General Dynamics division that builds tanks and other equipment for the military, a union official said.
About 720 workers who walked out a week ago over health care and pensions will not go back until the agreement is ratified by the rank-and-file, said Heather Parry, a member of the United Auto Workers. No date for the vote was announced.
She said the UAW's General Dynamics Council will vote Wednesday on whether to recommend that the rank-and-file ratify the proposal.
Several calls to a General Dynamics spokeswoman were not returned Monday. The strike affected employees at the company's Sterling Heights headquarters, 470 employees at a battle tank factory in Lima, Ohio, and workers at a tank parts facility in Eynon, Pa.
Details of the contract were not released.
