No deal on smoking bill
The Associated Press
COLUMBUS Hope dimmed Friday for compromise on a bill that prevents health boards from banning smoking, leading to a possible showdown next week between Gov. Bob Taft who opposes the bill and his fellow Republican lawmakers.
Local lawmakers would have to approve any board of health orders regarding the use of cigarettes or other tobacco products, under the bill sponsored by Sen. Lynn Wachtmann, R-Napoleon.
The bill, supported by restaurants, bars and grocery stores, has strong support in the GOP-controlled Senate and House. The Senate passed it overwhelmingly and the House vote is scheduled for Tuesday.
Mr. Taft has threatened a veto.
Opponents proposed several compromises Friday in an attempt to ward off a possible veto override.
Mr. Wachtmann said the proposals don't interest him.
