Kentucky state volleyball tournament
Pandas cruise in first round

UNION Notre Dame played volleyball Friday like it was in a hurry. It was an easy night for the Pandas, as they defeated Owensboro Apollo, 15-0, 15-3 in the opening round of the state tournament at Ryle High School.
It was fun, Notre Dame coach Bob Wood said. It's always neat to be in a game environment like this.
It was a miserable night for St. Henry. Louisville Mercy took out the Crusaders, 15-4, 15-8.
A much tougher test awaits the Pandas today: six-time defending state champion Louisville Assumption at 10:15 a.m. at Gray Middle School.
We're going to need a good night's sleep, Notre Dame junior setter Andrea Lanham said.
Assumption defeated Notre Dame in the regular season, but Wood was confident about an upset.
They've got a great team, Wood said. Are they beatable? I think they're beatable, our girls think they're beatable.
Assumption (37-0) coach Ron Kordes graded Friday's 15-6-15-3 win over Louisville Presentation a B.
I think we came out a little flat, Kordes said. (Presentation) came out swinging. They passed pret ty well.
Notre Dame, meanwhile, was sharp from the beginning against Apollo.
When Ryle public address announcer Jay Broadus wasn't announcing one of Lanham's 15 assists, he was calling one of senior Kelly Potter's eight kills.
We were trying to work on making (the game) perfect, running a lot and passing and defending shots, Lanham said.
Apollo senior Destiny Philp was nonetheless glad to have been on the same floor.
That was a good experience, Philp said. There's not a level of play like that in our region, district or anything.
Wood was not as worried about what Assumption does as what his team does with the ball.
If we take care of the ball on our side, Wood said. It'll be a great match.
