Looming 20 percent increases for Tristate health insurance in 2002 come after health insurance premiums rose about 11 percent nationally between spring 2000 and spring 2001, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.
The foundation is an independent nonprofit that analyzes national health-care issues.
The average monthly premium between 2000 and 2001 was $221 for single coverage and $588 for family coverage, a survey for the foundation shows.
Overall, the 2000-01 U.S. health insurance cost rise was the biggest year-to-year increase since 1992, the Kaiser survey said. On average, workers paid $30 a week for single coverage, about 15 percent of the premium, and $150 for family coverage, about 27 percent of the premium, the survey showed.
The foundation's survey was based on a random poll of 2,734 public and private employers who employed between three and 300,000 people at their companies.
