Fitch colors Blue-White game with big effort

The Associated Press

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Gerald Fitch scored 31 points and pulled down 14 rebounds as the Blue team beat the White team 109-92 in Kentucky's annual Blue-White scrimmage Saturday at Memorial Coliseum.

Fitch, a sophomore who started much of last season, hit 12 of 17 shots, including four of six 3-pointers, and added six assists for the Blue squad, which outscored the White 65-44 in the second half.

Tayshaun Prince scored 20 points, and Erik Daniels, J.P. Blevins and Marquis Estill added 16 each for the Blue team, which shot 55 percent from the field and outrebounded the White squad 43-35.

Keith Bogans led the White team with 25 points and Jules Camara had 16, freshman Chuck Hayes 15, Marvin Stone 14 and Cliff Hawkins 10.

“You can see why I'm so excited about this year's group,” Kentucky coach Tubby Smith said. “I thought we shot pretty well and had good balance on both sides. We've got competition at every position, and that's going to help us.”

A Prince 3-pointer and layups by Blevins and Fitch gave the Blue team a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the scrimmage. The White team roared back with an 8-0 run, capped by Bogans' one-handed breakaway dunk, to take the lead with 14 minutes remaining in the half.

Daniels scored six points during a 10-4 run to put the Blue team up 21-14 midway through the half. But an 11-0 run, capped by Hayes' 3-pointer, put the White squad up 25-21.

Another Prince 3-pointer and back-to-back layups by Fitch put the Blue squad up 44-37 with 1:08 to play in the half. Bogans' 3 and Hayes' inside basket and free throw pulled the White team within 44-43 at halftime.

“It seemed like the White team got behind and didn't really respond with the defensive intensity that it needed,” Smith said. “They played well at times but had a few letdowns that hurt them.”

It didn't take the Blue squad long to push the margin to double digits in the second half, using a 10-2 run to lead 61-49 with 17:30 to play.

        BLUE — Blevins 6-12 3-4 16, Fitch 12-17 3-4 31, Carrier 2-5 0-0 5, Daniels 7-13 2-3 16, Prince 9-15 0-1 20, Sears 2-5 0-0 5, Estill 5-12 6-6 16. Totals 43-79 14-18 109.
