Syracuse scores early, stops No. 5 VaTech's streak

Top 25 roundup

The Associated Press

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Jamel Riddle scored a 51-yard punt return in the first quarter as Syracuse ended No.5 Virginia Tech's 16-game home winning streak, 22-14 Saturday.

Virginia Tech (6-1, 3-1 Big East), which had beaten Syracuse by a combined 124-10 in the past three meetings at Lane Stadium, fell behind 14-0 in the first 7:25. It was the seventh straight win for the Orangemen (7-2, 4-0).

The Orangemen allowed Virginia Tech just 90 yards rushing, well below its average of 234, recovered two fumbles and blocked a punt.

        No.6 Florida 24,
       No.15 Georgia 10

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Rex Grossman passed for 407 yards and two touchdowns as Florida beat Georgia.

The Gators (6-1, 4-1 Southeastern Conference) gained 584 yards, their most ever in the 78-game history of this storied rivalry, but had to sweat this game out because of four turnovers, 106 yards in penalties and a host of other errors.

Not until Marquand Manuel forced a David Greene fumble with 5 minutes left did Florida have a firm grasp on its 11th victory in the last 12 meetings against Georgia (5-2, 4-2).

        No.7 Texas 35,
       Missouri 16

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Chris Simms passed for four touchdowns and ran for a fifth as Texas recovered from a frustrating start.

Cedric Benson had 157 yards on 31 carries, his third straight 100-yard game. Texas (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) put together several lengthy drives, scoring after 10, 13 and 11 plays, after coming up empty on an 18-play march at the start of the game.

The Longhorns' defense, giving up 13 points a game, held its fifth straight opponent to fewer than 300 yards.

No.8 Michigan 32, Iowa 26 IOWA CITY, Iowa — Marquise Walker made a stunning one-handed catch of John Navarre's pass for a touchdown, and Navarre threw a 13-yard TD pass to Shawn Thompson in the fourth quarter for the winning score as Michigan beat Iowa.

Michigan (6-1, 4-0 Big Ten), which had only 111 yards in the first half, pulled it out with the help of its defense after Iowa took a 26-21 lead on Ladell Betts' 8-yard TD run with 12:56 left.

        No.9 Tennessee 17,
       No.12 South Carolina 10

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Travis Stephens ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns to help Tennessee remain in the hunt for a trip to the Southeastern Conference championship game.

The Gamecocks (6-2, 5-2), who are 0-11 in Neyland Stadium and have lost nine straight to the Volunteers, never led but tied the score at 10 on Daniel Weaver's 24-yard field goal with 13:21 left.

On the next drive, the Vols (5-1, 4-1) took six minutes off the clock before Stephens scored from a yard out.

        No.19 Florida St. 52,
       No.10 Maryland 31

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Chris Rix threw five touchdown passes — three in the fourth quarter — to lead Florida State past previously unbeaten Maryland.

Florida State (5-2, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) climbed back into the thick of the ACC title race and kept its league home record a perfect 39-0 since joining in 1992.
        No.11 Oregon 24,
       No.14 Washington St. 17
PULLMAN, Wash. — Onterrio Smith ran for a school-record 285 yards and scored three times as Oregon beat Washington State. Smith, who had 26 carries, broke the 1971 Oregon record of 249 yards set by Bobby Moore — now known as Ahmad Rashad.

        Arkansas 42,
       No.17 Auburn 17

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Zak Clark threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Richard Smith, and backup quarterback Matt Jones made big plays running and throwing for Arkansas.

        No.24 Purdue 32,
       Northwestern 27

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Brandon Hance ran and passed for a touchdown and Montrell Lowe ran for 101 yards and a score as Purdue beat Northwestern.

Hance, who threw for 190 yards on 14-of-31 passing and rushed for 49 yards on nine carries, has thrown for over 200 yards only twice this year

        No.25 Colorado 22,
       Oklahoma St. 19
STILLWATER, Okla. — Bobby Pesavento threw a 21-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter and followed it with a 33-yard 2-point conversion pass, giving Colorado the win.
