HAMILTON Butler County will get its third skate park next summer thanks to a joint effort among Hamilton, Fairfield and the Hamilton Community Foundation.
The concrete skate park will be constructed on 10 acres along Forest Lake Lane on the Hamilton-Fairfield border in Joyce Park. Hamilton is donating land for the project, while Fairfield and the foundation are each providing $100,000 for construction, said Jim Bell, Fairfield parks and recreation director.
The Hamilton-Fairfield Joint Advisory Committee, which includes council members from both cities, is leading development of the park.
We get a lot of comments from kids saying there is a minimal amount of activities they can do here, said Hamilton Mayor Adolf Olivas. A skateboard park is always number one or two on their list along with a teen nightclub. This has been done successfully in other cities.
Suburban Rails, an Athens, Ohio, company that designed the half-acre skate arena that opened two years ago in Middletown's Smith Park, and the skate park under construction in Oxford, is designing the new park.
Like the other two parks, this one will cater to in-line skaters and skateboarders. It is envisioned as an L-shaped arena with a streetscape design, said Mel Durand, president of Suburban Rails. It will have a low section with ledges, rails and banks, a street course and higher elements. A curved bowl could become part of the design depending on cost and interest among skaters.
Meetings will be scheduled soon to get community comment on the design.
