Outside funds for UC research reach record

Fiscal-year total keeps university in top 20

By Ben L. Kaufman
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Outside research funds attracted by the University of Cincinnati rose more than 19 percent to a record $230 million in the fiscal year that ended June 30.

That keeps UC in the nation's top 20 public research universities, spokeswoman Chris Cur ran said, quoting the data-driven Lombardi Program on Measuring University Performance.

“We're attracting excellent faculty and they're competitive,” said physicist Howard Jackson, vice president for research and advanced studies.

“This is a very healthy increase.”

Most of the total — $129.1 million — was federal money, up 11.7 percent from last year.

It also helped that key federal agencies, the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health, had much more money to award in these peer-reviewed grant competitions, Dr. Jackson said.

He said about three in 10 proposals win their funding.

The East/Medical campus drew $101.3 million, and the West/Clifton Avenue campus pulled in $50.9 million.

Awards ranged from genetics to Greek poetry.

UC faculty working at the Childrens Hospital Research Foundation were awarded another $65.1 million, and those at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center received $2.8 million.

Other UC faculty at the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Cincinnati Burns Hospital received $2.2 million and the affiliated Office of Clinical Drug Trials pulled in $6.9 million, Dr. Jackson said.

Industrial support rose nearly 20 percent, to $6.2 million.
