Kentucky cross country preview

Brossart sets sights on titles

By Ray Schaefer
Enquirer Contributor

Bishop Brossart's cross country teams want to make school history times two at today's state meet.

The Mustang boys go for a record third straight Class A state title at the Kentucky Horse Park near Lexington, while the Mustang girls look for their first to go with five straight Class A state track titles.

“It would be a nice little feather in our cap,” boys coach Ray Kues said.

Girls coach Dave Schuh said his team has left a legacy regardless of what happens today.

“Until this year we've never won a regional in cross country,” Schuh said. “We have a pretty veteran group of runners.”

Schuh could have been just as well talking about the boys. The Mustangs also won state twice in a row, in 1991-92.

“It reminds me a lot of the '91 team that had a lot of seniors,” Kues said of this year's squad. “There was a lot of senior leadership.”

That much is true this season. Seniors Tim Kaiser and Paul Markus have been near the front in every race they've entered, and Kaiser has won six races.

“Basically, (Kaiser) leads by example, he gets the job done,” Kues said. “The rest of the team, when they see him out front, the rest of them work harder.”

The rest of the Mustangs are pretty good, and never more so than last week. Kaiser, Markus and sophomore Joey Heil finished 1-2-3, senior Ian McDole was fifth and senior Zac Dietrich was 16th.

“Our top four runners, I'm hoping they'll be in the top 15,” Kues said.

Brossart's girls have worked just as hard as the boys, and like them seniors have led the way.

At the regional, seniors Holly Johnson and Megan Uebel finished fourth and fifth, followed by junior Tricia Brun in sixth and Holly's sister Erin Johnson in seventh. Junior Chelsea Elam's 15th place finish clinched the title.

In Class AA, Lloyd's girls are ranked fourth behind Warren East, Louisville Mercy and Fort Campbell.

Highlands' boys are third in AA behind Warren East and Owensboro Catholic. Individually, Highlands sophomore Braylen Derrick is rated third, and Lloyd Memorial sophomore Keith Knapp is 10th.

In Class AAA girls, Notre Dame senior Meghan Crowe is 13th in the state, and Campbell County freshman Sara Hater is 14th.

In AAA boys, Covington Catholic senior Chris Davis is fifth in the state. Scott senior Michael Hicks is 11th Campbell County senior Denny Kramer is 12th and Ryle senior Daniel Tracy is 13th.
