UK prepares for QB audible by Miss. St.

The Associated Press

JACKSON, Miss. — The quarterback controversy at Kentucky is cooling off, just as the one at Mississippi State is heating up.

For the Wildcats (1-6, 0-5 Southeastern Conference), Jared Lorenzen has reclaimed the starting job over Shane Boyd.

The Bulldogs' (1-5, 0-4) plan is a bit more complex. They want to start Wayne Madkin and bring Kevin Fant off the bench — maybe.

“We'll start Wayne but play Kevin somewhere in the first quarter,” Mississippi State coach Jackie Sherrill said. “I say that, but the ball could bounce the other way so you never know. Really, we'll go by feel.”

Madkin, a senior, has made 39 career starts and the Bulldogs have won 24 of those games. He's the school's career leader in yards passing. But he has completed just 51.6 percent of his passes for 917 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions this season.

“I'm fine with playing two quarterbacks,” he said. “We've got to get ready for the future, so now's the time to do it.”

Fant saw his most extensive playing time in the Bulldogs' last game, a 42-0 loss to LSU that extended their losing streak to five games. He was 11-for-26 for 168 yards with two interceptions against the Tigers.

Kentucky coach Guy Morriss said Lorenzen is making better adjustments at the line of scrimmage and running the offense smoothly.

“I just think he has a better understanding of how the whole picture fits together,” Morriss said.

The Wildcats have scored 54 points in their last two games, losses to LSU and Georgia.
