Kentucky girls cross country

Scott second, Campbell and Brossart third

By Ray Schaefer
Enquirer contributor

LEXINGTON — Three Northern Kentucky girls cross country teams turned in good performances at Saturday's state meet, but not quite good enough to win.

In Class AAA, Scott finished second to Bowling Green Greenwood, 53-149. Campbell County took third with 179.

It was almost the same in Class A, where Bishop Brossart's bid for its first state title fell two places short. Hancock County defeated Frankfort 54-78, and Brossart was third with 98.

But neither runners nor coaches seemed too disappointed about the outcome. Especially Scott, which won its seventh straight regional title last week.

“We were going for first, but we just went out to run our best and let everything fall into place,” said sophomore Renee Smith, who at 20th place was the first Eagle to the finish line.

Campbell County freshman Sara Hater was the fastest Northern Kentuckian among AAA runners. She took seventh in 19:27.4, and she flirted with the lead for much of the race.

“My goal was to get top 10,” Hater said. “A little before the 2-mile, my side started hurting. I was still telling myself I had no pain in my body.

        “I felt good; I wish I could've done better.”

North Hardin senior Elizabeth Campbell won AAA in 18:46.3.

Class A

When Brossart coach Dave Schuh compared times, he was satisfied with third place.

“That's probably where we belong,” Schuh said. “We had all seven of our runners in the top 37. We didn't have anybody that could break up Hancock County's pack or Frankfort's pack.”

The youngest Mustang, seventh-grader Jill Heil, was the top finisher, in 12th place.

“I think I really felt strong early in the race,” Heil said.

Freshman Erica Johnson was next (21), followed by senior and sister Holly Johnson (22), senior Megan Uebel (25) and junior Chelsea Elam (32).

“We had a great year,” Uebel said. “We told ourselves it was going to be close; whatever happened, we were going to be happy.”

Hancock County senior Heather Vincent won the race. St. Henry senior Chrissy Cummings finished eighth, best among Northern Kentucky runners.

Class AA

Bowling Green Warren East easily won the team title, defeating Fort Campbell 31-104. Louisville Mercy was third with 104, followed by Lloyd Memorial and Highlands with 155 and 158, respectively.

Mercy freshman Carmen Mims won in 19:14.2. Highlands eighth-grader Darcie Dressman was the highest Northern Kentucky finisher, in 13th place. Lloyd senior Britt Rodgers was next in 14th.
