Young listeners sound off
We asked readers ages 18 to 34 what would bring them to a Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra concert. Here are some e-mail replies:
Angela Tomson, 28, of Oakley said she and her husband enjoy going to the symphony but have never attended the CSO.
Part of the reason we haven't gone is due to lack of awareness. We don't see it advertised often; as a result it's not even on our list of potential entertainment options. We simply don't think about it. . . . I have the perception that it would be relatively expensive.
She suggests offering discounted tickets, partnering with downtown restaurants and informing men that it's OK to wear business casual.
Chris Hoff, 27, of Mason thinks the CSO should advertise in media and locations frequented by my age group.
Also, combining formats would make things a little more interesting. The CSO could try performing with artists or bands, such as Dave Matthews. . . . The mix would blur the lines a little.
With a modest income, student loans and a new house, the symphony is just too expensive. . . . The CSO should advertise their buffet nights more, as starving twenty- and thirtysomethings love the opportunity for free food followed by beautiful music. Heather Nichols, 29, Cheviot
I would go if I were given tickets, or discounted tickets, to try it for a first time. Plus, I would need a schedule. Paula Sellars, 34, Walnut Hills
I would love to see young, talented solo violinists performing with the CSO. A few of my favorites are Sarah Chang and Midori.'' Kimble R. McDowell, 34, Fairfield
For me to go to the symphony, it would take some knowledge of the pieces. . . . A more detailed description of the history of the composer, etc., would be helpful. It is hard for me to simply sit and listen, as I grew up in the age of computers and multitasking . . . I would enjoy some light-hearted interaction from the musicians or conductor. Rebecca Chou, 28, Clifton
I want Beethoven's Ninth, just about any Tchaikovsky (Swan Lake, 1812 Overture, Nutcracker) and Rossini. A little Verdi wouldn't hurt, either. Jason Hoskins, 31, Clifton/Fairview
What would make me go?
1. Great music
2. A new conductor
3. An exciting music hall
4. A talented guest artist
5. Free tickets
Looks like I'm almost set! Joan Lau, 31, formerly of Clifton, now Philadelphia
