CLAYTON The relentless assault by the Turpin boys soccer team started in the first minute and didn't stop until the final whistle.
In another dominating performance, the Spartans won the Division II regional championship with a 4-0 victory over Chaminade-Julienne at Northmont Stadium.
The defending Division II state champion Spartans advance to the state semifinals Tuesday at Centerville Soccer Stadium.
Senior striker Marc Burch scored three consecutive goals to lift the Spartans into a 4-0 halftime lead.
This tournament is about respect, Burch said. We're the defending state champions and weren't ranked in the top 10 in the state.
Matt Money, C-J's second-year coach, was impressed with Burch.
Burch is Turpin's go-to player, and he came through for them, Money said. We tried everything, but we had a tough time stopping him. Turpin's a good team, and Burch is a great player.
The Spartans took the lead 4:43 into the game when Wes Ernst took a centering pass and beat C-J goalie Ben Overman.
During the next 20 minutes, the Turpin offense pounded away, ending up with 16 shots in the first 40 minutes, while the Eagles managed only two that Spartans goalie Mike Vessels saved.
Marc was in a zone tonight, Turpin coach John Basalyga said. Big players come up in big games, and Marc did it tonight.
Playing on a narrow football field (68 yards wide) wasn't a problem for a Turpin team that uses the 78-yard-wide Forest Hills Soccer Stadium for home games.
We practiced on a field 60 yards wide during the tournament to get ready for the narrower fields, Basalyga said. The state should standardize the fields for the tournament.
For the game, Turpin took 27 shots to 12 for C-J.
I now think we can win it, said Burch, who has 29 goals for the season.
