Reading designer wins bridal award

By Joy Kraft
The Cincinnati Enquirer

When 800 international and AmericanUnited States department and specialty stores in the bridal biz marked their ballots for Bridal Accessory Designer of the Year, Cincinnatian Debra Moreland and her Paris Ltd. business racked up the most votes.

Luckily, she had some advance notice so she could prepare for the Couture Bridal Awards ceremony in New York City Oct. 6. The presentation of a glass trophy marking her honor was made even more special because it was presented by emcee and sought-after wedding planner Colin Cowie. Ms. Moreland met him about three years ago when she put together a presentation at the Phoenix, downtown, where he appeared.

Other awards went to Vera Wang for classic dress designer, Amy Michelson for new dress designer and Reem Acra as dress designer.

Ms. Moreland specializes in jeweled tiaras, combs, headbands and decorative pins for the hair plus jeweled handbags, shoe clips, necklaces, bracelets and “barefoot sandals” for beach and cruise weddings. Ms. Moreland's store is at 305 W. Benson St., Reading. 948-8888.

"Ebony' Fashion Fair: The “Changing Trends of Fashion,” Ebony's 44th fashion show, will hit the runway 8 p.m. Friday, at Music Hall, downtown. The Cincinnati chapter of Links Inc. again will sponsor the event that showcases spectacular designs for men and women. Honorary co-chairs are Lois Rosenthal and designer Bobbie Corbean.

The Links “After-Party” ($15) will feature music, dancing and food. Tickets: $20-$45 at Music Hall or from Links members. Information: 874-9700.

New DSW shoes: DSW Shoe Warehouse, with designer off-price shoes, opened its second Greater Cincinnati store Oct. 23 at Springdale Plaza across from Tri-County Mall. DSW operates 92 stores across the U.S. The other Greater Cincinnati store is at the Fields-Ertel Road exit off Interstate 71.

Shop for charity: Parisian will hold its fall Charity Sale event 6-10 a.m. Saturday. The event raises more than $1 million annually for charities in the communities where Parisian stores are located.

The special morning of shopping is open to those who have purchased a $5 ticket, which gives them a 20 percent discount throughout the store (with some exclusions), refreshments and a chance to win door prizes. Information: 792-2400.

Patriotic tattoos: If you think a patriotic tattoo best expresses your support for Uncle Sam but the thought of needlework leaves you weak in the knees, look for Hollywood makeup artist Christien Tinsley's creations at Cappel's. The temporary tattoo designs include a 1950s flag girl, an American flag and an American flag butterfly. $4 with 20 percent going to United Way of New York's Sept. 11 Fund. Information: www.tinsleytransfers.com.

New men's fragrances: Tommy Hilfiger and Victoria's Secret have introduced new fragrances for men. Hilfiger's “T For Him” is described as “playful, clean and sexy,” geared to today's “young, trend-setting generation.” $35 for 1.7 ounces; $50 for 3.4 ounces.

Victoria's Secret's “Very Sexy For Him” is the lingerie king's first scent for men. It's described as “fresh with sexy undertones.” $33 for 1.7 ounces; $48 for 3.4 ounces. Also available in body wash, after shave and deodorant at Victoria's Secret store or www.VictoriasSecret.com.
