Bus garage burglarized
Tools stolen from Campbell Co. facility

ALEXANDRIA Burglars broke into the Campbell County school bus garage early Friday, stealing thousands of dollars worth of tools, police said.
The burglary happened after 2 a.m. at the garage located across from the Board of Education office on Orchard Lane, said Mike Dawson, director of Transportation for Campbell County Schools. The theft was discovered by a mechanic reporting to work at 4:30 a.m.
The thieves knew what they wanted and what they were after, Mr. Dawson said. We are not sure what the final amount is yet because we are still figuring out what was taken. They took certain name-brand tools and left other items by the wayside.
A truckload of maintenance tools, supplies and ladders worth $5,000 to $10,000 were taken, according to a police report. Mr. Dawson said many of the stolen items were the property of the mechanics who work for the district and not the county's.
The Alexandria Police and Campbell County Police are conducting a joint investigation. Police believe the thieves broke into the bus garage through the rear door, opened one of the front bay doors, and backed a truck into the garage to load the stolen items.
The Campbell County Transportation Department is scheduled to move into a new building on U.S. 27 by Jan. 31. Mr. Dawson said the new facility will have added security measures.
