Chabot to join U.N. delegation
By Derrick DePledge
The Cincinnati Enquirer
WASHINGTON Rep. Steve Chabot will be part of the U.S. delegation today at the United Nations when President Bush speaks to world leaders about international terrorism.
Mr. Chabot, a Cincinnati Republican, also has been selected with Delegate Eni Faleomavaega, D-American Samoa, to serve as congressional representatives to the United Nations' 56th session. The appointments rotate between members of the House and Senate.
Mr. Chabot is vice chairman of the House International Relations Committee's Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia.
What I intend to do is emphasize that fighting terrorism is this country's No. 1 priority, he said.
We encourage and expect that other nations have gotten the president's message that they are either with us or with the terrorists.
Mr. Chabot said he is not worried that some U.S. allies apparently are having doubts about the bombing campaign in Afghanistan to attack the ruling Taliban for harboring suspected Saudi terrorist Osama bin Laden.
He said the United States must send a clear and direct message about its resolve.
Not every country will have to participate in the same way, Mr. Chabot said. But the emphasis is that we're in this together.
The congressman also said he would try to use the appointment to raise the issue of international child abduction. with world leaders. Mr. Chabot has been an advocate for parents of abducted children after hearing the story of a Blue Ash man whose former wife took their daughter to Austria.
