Events honoring veterans
Ohio
BATAVIA The Donald E. Patton Memorial will be dedicated at 12:15 p.m. Sunday at the Heritage Building on Riverside Drive in Batavia. The annual Clermont County Veterans Day Parade will begin at 2 p.m. on Main Street.
BLUE ASH Brig. Gen. Robert W. Mixon Jr., deputy commander at Fort Knox, Ky., will be keynote speaker at 10:30 a.m. Sunday for ceremonies at Blue Ash Bicentennial Veterans Memorial Park.
COLERAIN TOWNSHIP Veterans Day will be marked by a Community Freedom Celebration at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Colerain High School football stadium. The high school is at 8801 Cheviot Road.
DOWNTOWN Bobbie Sterne, former Cincinnati city councilwoman, will be keynote speaker at the 47th annual Veterans Day program at 10:45 a.m. Monday at the main library, 800 Vine St.
GREEN TOWNSHIP The Veterans Day Committee and Green Township trustees will host the 11th annual Veterans Day ceremonies Sunday at Veterans Park, 6231 Harrison Ave. A parade will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a memorial ceremony at Patriotic Plaza. Ohio Rep. William Seitz will deliver the keynote address.
HAMILTON A veterans assembly will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Monroe Elementary School in Hamilton, 951 Carriage Hill Lane.
HYDE PARK World War II Navy veteran Theodore Gardner will be the featured speaker during Wednesday's 1 p.m. program at the Hyde Park Center, 2800 Erie Ave.
MILFORD American Legion Victor Stier Post 450 in Milford will host an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 9-1 p.m. Sunday at 111 Race St. Milford-area military veterans with the proper ID can eat free. There will be a moment of silence at 11 a.m. for deceased veterans. Donations, $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12, are requested.
OXFORD The Oxford Lane Library, VFW Post 9579 and the Oxford Parks and Recreation Department are sponsoring a day of activities Sunday for veterans. A 1 p.m. memorial ceremony will take place at Martin Luther King Park at Main and High streets. A 2 p.m. program at the Oxford Lane Library, 15 S. College Ave., will feature brief recollections of the service by two area veterans and an open microphone session.
WILLIAMSBURG A program featuring the Williamsburg Community Band and Williamsburg students will be 7:30 p.m. Monday at Williamsburg Middle/High School, 500 S. Fifth St.
Kentucky
VILLA HILLS Historical Society Veterans Day ceremony, noon Sunday at the Niewahner Memorial Island at Niewahner and Valley Trails drives. An honor guard of Villa Hills veterans representing each branch of the military and active duty personnel will be in attendance.
ERLANGER: Forest Lawn Cemetery ceremony for veterans who gave their lives in service to the nation, 12:30 p.m. Sunday, 3227 Dixie Hwy. Featured speaker will be Kenton County Sheriff Chuck Korzenborn. Patriotic music performed by the Boone County High School Concert Choir. The Civil Air Patrol of Campbell County will provide the color guard. In the event of inclement weather the ceremony will be held in the chapel in the mausoleum.
CAMPBELL COUNTY Historical Society open house and veteran's ceremony, 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Alexandria Courthouse, 19 E. Main St. At 1:30 p.m. there will be a flag-raising service with color guards from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, a speech and a musical ceremony. Ornaments of a patriotic theme (either handmade or bought) will be accepted during the open house to decorate the society's Christmas tree.
The BOY SCOUTS of Boone and Gallatin counties, and Cub Scout Pack 832 from Warsaw will be placing flags on veterans' graves Sunday as part of the second year of the Adopt-A-Cemetery program. Boy Scouts from 10 units will honor 20 cemeteries, and Cub Scout Pack 832 will honor five cemeteries. Flags were provided by American Legion Post 4 of Florence and the Elks Lodge of Florence. Special graveside commemorations will be held for four veterans, two of the Revolutionary War and two of the Vietnam War.
CRESCENT SPRINGS: Kenton County Veterans Memorial ceremony, 2 p.m. Sunday, Western Reserve and Anderson roads. Patriotic music will begin at 1 p.m. An honor guard from Ralph-Fulton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6423 in Elsmere will present the colors during a flag-raising ceremony. Speakers include U.S. Rep. Ken Lucas, and Kenton County Judge-executive Dick Murgatroyd. Master of ceremony is John Lomax of 12 WKRC-TV.
NEWPORT: Lawler-Hanlon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 326 Parade 11 a.m. Sunday. Parade route starts at 10th and Patterson, and continues East on 10th Street to the city building at 998 Monmouth St. Raising and lowering of the flag starts at 10:40 a.m.
FLORENCE: Elks Lodge 314 will conduct a Salute to the Military, from 8-9:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at the lodge, 7704 Dixie Highway. A reception will be held for all military personnel in attendance.
