Ohio River back open after spill
The Associated Press
LOUISVILLE The stretch of the Ohio River that was closed after a punctured barge leaked nearly 85,000 gallons of gasoline was opened Saturday, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.
We do not expect to have to close the area again, U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Steve Garcia said Saturday. We have crews doing some minor cleanups, but nothing that would warrant a closing.
The 1 1/2-mile stretch of river between the Big Four Bridge and the Portland Canal was temporarily opened Friday night, but closed early Saturday morning to facilitate onwater cleanup activities during daylight hours, Lt. Garcia said.
Barges have been waiting since the Wednesday night accident to pass through the restricted area.
The barge, owned by Waxler Towing Co. of Memphis, Tenn., was transporting 1.5 million gallons of gasoline for Marathon Ashland Petroleum from the company's Catlettsburg refinery to the Paducah area when it hit a metal barrier.
Lt. Garcia said the barge is on its way to Mississippi for repairs.
The leaking tanks held 315,000 gallons, officials said. The remaining gasoline was moved to another vessel.
No injuries were reported and no homes were evacuated.
