Best & worst of week in sports

The Enquirer sports department's look at who rated — good and bad — this week in sports:

Best

        1. Prep football. OK, we knew it was big in this town. But the Division I doubleheader at Paul Brown Stadium took on a life of its own. As one prep follower observed: “When did high school football in Cincinnati become college football in Lincoln, Neb.?”

        2. Prep volleyball. Cincinnati, which recently has produced dozens of collegiate players, has maintained its high quality, evidenced by Saturday's St. Ursula-Ursuline state championship match.

        3. Pro football. Up front, this could be an argument why the NFL should be in the bottom five. Parity. Not only are the Bengals and Bears in playoff contention, but 35 of the 55 games the past four weeks were decided by eight points or less.

        4. Lute Olson, college basketball. He lost four starters, has six freshmen among his nine scholarship players and then upset No.2 Maryland and No. 6 Florida.

        5. Golf's silly season. Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus vs. Sergio Garcia and Lee Trevino in a made-for-TV event? Hey, why not? Beats the Buick Open.

Worst

        1. Bud Selig. Bud Lite? How about Bud Heavy-Handed. Announcing contraction without even pretending to get the players' opinion? Just hours after what some say was the best World Series ever? Say this, the man's consistent.

        2. The baseball owners. Everyone wants to rip Bud, but these rich bigwigs are every bit as responsible. Selig does only what these guys want. They want to get rid of two teams, split the added revenue, all the while crying poor. How are these guys rich? It must have been inherited money.

        3. The baseball players. OK, they've done nothing yet. But stay tuned. Will they cry over lost jobs? Yep, and judging by history, they'll ultimately win. But it's hard to feel millionaires have been wronged when you read about thousands of layoffs each day on the business pages.

        4. The baseball agents. Right now, Scott Boras is plotting a six-year, nine-figure contract for Barry Bonds. Isn't that reason enough?

        5. The baseball fans. We appreciate the beauty of the game, but boy, we must be the biggest suckers around if we're going to put up with this offseason.
