Ky. Baptists' neutrality up for vote
The Associated Press
MURRAY Kentucky Baptists are expected to cast votes this week that could determine whether it will remain one of the few state conventions that have stayed neutral during ongoing national battles that have dominated Southern Baptist politics.
More than 2,000 Baptists will be in Murray on Tuesday to elect a new president and other officers. The convention also plans to discuss two key issues the Bible and the role of women.
Conservative and moderate groups are backing different candidates for officers in the election that would affect the 2,500 Kentucky Baptist churches.
Conservatives say it's time for the state Baptists to align more with their national affiliate. The Southern Baptist Convention is dominated by members who view the Bible as a true historical and scientific doctrine and that men should be in authority in churches and homes.
Moderates fear a state-level repeat of what they call the fundamentalist takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention.
The convention also will vote on what to do with the Southern Baptist Convention's new, more conservative statement of faith, the Baptist Faith and Message. The national convention's revisions last year included opposing women pastors.
