What's the Buzz?
P&G still world's top ad spender
By Cliff Peale
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Procter & Gamble Co. spent $2.6 billion on advertising outside the United States in 2000, second only to competitor Unilever, according to a survey in Advertising Age.
The survey showed P&G's non-U.S. ad spending down 8.8 percent compared with 1999. But combined with U.S. numbers, Cincinnati-based P&G still is the world's biggest ad spender with $4.15 billion, the trade publication said.
P&G has said its advertising spending has remained steady as a percentage of sales and that the Ad Age numbers do not include some other marketing methods such as Internet and direct mail.
While the United States is P&G's biggest market, many of its highest-growth markets are in other countries.
