Arriving & happening in area bookstores

Building Ohio: A Traveler's Guide to Urban Ohio by Jane Ware (Orange Frazer Press; $22). Billed by its publisher as “the first architectural guide ever for Ohio,” this paperback takes in hundreds of buildings from courthouses, skyscrapers and museums to houses, churches and barns. It includes floorplans, drawings, photos and — most important to Shelf — directions to finding each and every one of 'em. It is the first of two volumes. Signing: 1 p.m. Saturday, Borders Tri-County, 11711 Princeton Pike, Springdale. (513) 671-5852.

The Christmas Box Miracle: My Spiritual Journey of Destiny, Healing and Hope by Richard Paul Evans (Simon & Schuster; $17.95). In 1994, Mr. Evans self-published a small Christmas story in paperback, The Christmas Box, that soon became a word-of-mouth sensation. It was the story of how a widow taught a young married man the true meaning of the holidays. This book is the story behind the making of that book, how it changed Mr. Evans' life and of the people he met after the book was published. Signing: 2 p.m. Saturday, Books & Co., 350 E. Stroop Road, Kettering (937) 298-6540.

Booknotes: Stories From American History edited by Brian Lamb (Public Affairs; $29.95). Excerpts from television interviews with leading historians and writers about pivotal moments in American history. Mr. Lamb is the founding CEO of C-SPAN and host of Booknotes, the cable network's long-running weekly show about writers and books. Signing: 7 p.m. Monday, Books & Co., 350 E. Stroop Road, Kettering (937) 298-6540.

National Children's Book Week is being celebrated through Saturday. Look for special story hours and author visits at stores andlibraries, including the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, which has scheduled appearances at branches by Helen Lester (Hooway for Wodney Wat; Houghton Mifflin; ages 4-8), Jim Harrison (Wild Times; Orange Frazer Press; ages 12 and up) and Brandon Marie Miller (Buffalo Gals: Women of the Old West; Lerner Publishing Group; ages 9-12).
