What Tristaters are reading
Howard Elliott. Assistant director, supplier Diversity Development, Procter & Gamble Co.:
Tipping Point How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell (Back Bay; $14.95).
I don't buy everything he (Mr. Gladwell) says, (but) It's an interesting book ... about marketing in general and how you can take relatively few resources and get a big marketing message out by talking to the right people in the marketplace.
The theory, he says, is There are people who have this role of spreading the word to other consumers. If you can identify who those people are, and reach them, you can get the word out relatively inexpensively.
Dwight Tillery, Consultant; African American Political Caucus founder and committee member:
The Future of Success by Robert Reich (Alfred A. Knopf; $26).
It's about making a living and making a life and how both are becoming harder to do in spite of the wealth we've been able to generate ... He (Mr. Reich) talks a great deal about the new economy and what technology is doing to the professional and personal lives of people. On one hand, technology is giving us enormous choices, but on the other, it promotes fierce competition ... Customer loyalty has kind of gone out the window.
Personally, he talks about how much he loved the (White House) job that he always found plenty to do, but he was very consumed by work and (was) spending little time with his family.
