Hampton stuns Tar Heels 77-69

No. 19 UNC just 6-of-34 on 3-point attempts

The Associated Press

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Tommy Adams scored 20 points and Hampton baited No.19 North Carolina into missing 28 of 34 3-pointers in a 77-69 upset of the Tar Heels Friday night.

“Yeah, we are all kind of shocked,” said UNC senior Brian Bersticker. “But that's what's great about college basketball: Anybody can beat anybody on any given night.”

Hampton lost three starters off last season's NCAA Tournament team and was without suspended starter Cleveland Davis. But North Carolina trailed by double digits most of the game.

“The one thing I do know about our kids is they know how to win,” said Hampton coach Steve Merfeld. “They don't like losing. We'll compete and battle to the bitter end.”

Barry Hairston and Devin Green each added 18 points for the Pirates, who made 14 straight free throws in the final 2:35 to help seal the victory.
