NHL roundup

Predators beat Columbus

Enquirer news services

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Greg Johnson scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, to lead the Nashville Predators to a 3-2 victory Saturday night over the Columbus Blue Jackets in the NHL.

Both teams were scoreless in the first period but each scored a pair of goals in the second.

        • Flyers 3, Devils 1, at East Rutherford, N.J. — Philadelphia Flyers goalie Roman Cechmanek fought a battle on two fronts. He took on the rival New Jersey Devils and a flu bug that sapped his energy.

Cechmanek defeated both foes Saturday, by making 33 saves in the victory over the slumping Devils.

“I'm a little tired now,” Cechmanek said. “I felt good all game. My teammates helped me and I helped them. I was able to focus all game. New Jersey is a very dangerous team.”

        • Lightning 2, 'Canes 0, at Tampa, Fla. — In a game with very few quality scoring chances, the Lightning took advantage of theirs.

Ben Clymer scored the go-ahead goal with 7:52 left in the third period, and Nikolai Khabibulin recorded his 23rd career shutout.

The Southeast Division-leading Hurricanes have scored just 14 goals in their past eight games. “It was a tight-checking game, and we had the breakdown before they did,” Carolina forward Jeff O'Neill said. “That was the game right there.”

        • Caps 4, Ducks 1, at Washington — Adam Oates had a goal and three assists Washington extended Anaheim's winless streak to six games.

Jaromir Jagr, Matt Pettinger and Chris Simon also scored for the Capitals, who were 2-7-1 in their previous 10 games. Washington had been outscored 16-5 in losing two straight.

        • Bruins 3, Sabres 1, at Boston — Jamie Rivers had two goals after scoring just nine in his seven NHL seasons and Boston won its third straight game.

Rivers, a defenseman filling in for injured right wing Scott Pellerin, never scored more than two goals in any of his six previous seasons with St. Louis, the New York Islanders and Ottawa.

        • Penguins 1, Rangers 0, OT, at Pittsburgh — Jan Hrdina scored with 18.5 seconds left in overtime, snapping the New York Rangers' six-game winning streak. Goalie Johan Hedberg made 26 saves for his second shutout of the season.

        • Habs 1, Panthers 0, OT, at Montreal — Karl Dykhuis scored 3:55 into overtime with Montreal's 45th shot. Jose Theodore recorded his first shutout of the season for Montreal, which won for the first time in its last three games.

“I was lucky on mine,” Dykhuis said. “I just blasted it, hoping for the best, and it went in.”

        • Red Wings 4, Kings 2, at Detroit — The Detroit Red Wings scored two power-play goals and one short-handed. Nicklas Lidstrom had a goal and an assist for Detroit, which outshot L.A. 33-10.

        • Senators 2, Leafs 1, OT, at Ottawa Defenseman Karel Rachunek scored with 4.8 seconds left in overtime.
