Florist Dennis Buttelwerth has a vintage Jim Borgman original, one he bought because he was, well, close to the events at hand, he said when the Enquirer invited readers to Show Us Your Borgman.
Back in 1987, I was co-chair of the Theme & Decor Committee for the World Figure Skating Championships. The Borgman I own and proudly hang in my office, appeared the morning after the show left town.
It is a drawing of a street cleaner doing an imagined figure skating move with his trash can and broom, while the streets are littered with the banners, posters and streamers that hung everywhere.
The banners, posters and streamers were one of the functions of his theme and decor committee.
Mr. Buttelwerth has another an official copy but not the original that is even more meaningful to him. It's the one that appeared the morning after Ryan White died of AIDS. Ryan White's mother owns the original.
With Jim's permission, Mr. Buttelwerth says, I duplicated his drawing as a panel for the AIDS Quilt in San Francisco, as his memorial to Ryan. Now the whole world can share it.
