Morning Memo

Hot tips and news to start your business day

Today's Number: 60% - How many of the 80 billion noncash payments each year are by check, according to the Federal Reserve. That's down from 85 percent in 1979, the last time a comprehensive study was done.

Today's Mover : Robert Rogers has joined A.M. Kinney Inc., an architectural and engineering firm, as senior structural engineer. Mr. Rogers has 11 years' experience in structural engineering design for commercial, industrial and institutional facilities. He has bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering from Ohio University.

Today's Career Advice: Ajit Jain, insurance executive at Berkshire Reinsurance, has a couple of key business rules, according to The Warren Buffett CEO: Secrets from the Berkshire Hathaway Managers by Robert P. Miles:

        • When you take risks, you must accept losses but not let the prospect of losses keep you up at night.

        • Do your research, then decide.

        • If, after researching deals, you remain on the fence, consider your indecision a decision. “Decline and move onto the next opportunity,” Mr. Jain says.

Today's Money Tip: Before voluntarily changing jobs, consider any accrued pension benefits you may be leaving behind. Vesting in pension and 401(k) plans typically grows with each year of service. If you are considering leaving, you may want to finish out your year to maximize what you have coming to you.

        Today's Company: Financial Fitness Group

FIGURING FOR THE FUTURE: This company is celebrating its first decade. Headed by CPA Jim Volpe, the firm focuses on helping small businesses envision and plan for their financial futures. It also teaches people how to understand balance sheets and income statements.

SOFTWARE MASTERS: Financial Fitness CPAs advocate use of QuickBook accounting software and present classes for small-business owners in how to use it effectively.

ABSENTEE CONTROLLERS: Realizing that small businesses often go through a period in which they need accounting help but can't justify adding a full-time chief financial officer, Financial Fitness provides outsourced comptroller services.
