Butler un-caps payroll
Military service won't mean cut

HAMILTON As a gesture of support for the armed services, the Butler County commissioners took steps Monday to ensure that any county employee called to active duty will not be financially penalized.
The commissioners voted to remove a $500-per-month salary compensation limit for county employees serving active duty.
Before, the county could pay no more than $500 a month to make up the difference between an employee's armed services salary and his county salary.
If a county employee were earning $1,200 a month in the military and had been paid $2,000 a month by the county, Butler could provide no more than $500 compensation.
For example
That meant the person would have to absorb a $300 monthly loss of salary while on active duty.
Now, Butler could pay the full $800 difference.
We want to make the military personnel whole so they don't suffer any losses while serving, said Commissioner Chuck Furmon, who made the proposal. We certainly appreciate their freedom-fighting efforts.
He said he doesn't know how many employees this affects, but he thinks it's very few.
