D. DeLotell was bowling columnist

        COVINGTON — Don DeLotell, former Enquirer bowling columnist and an amateur bowling champ, died Saturday of cancer and congestive heart failure at St. Charles Care Center. He was 88.

        Mr. DeLotell, also known as “Mr. Bowling,” wrote the Sunday column from 1946 to 1958. In 1957, he was the National Knights of Columbus singles champion.

        After he left the Enquirer, he built the old Summit Bowl in Roselawn; then he became general manager of Columbia Lanes in Hamilton.

        In 1973, He was inducted into the Cincinnati Bowling Hall of Fame.

        Mr. DeLotell graduated from Purcell High School in 1933 and went to work as a clerk for Railway Express. During the '30s, he also sold tickets at River Downs and did free-lance sports reporting for the Enquirer. His association with the racetrack would span 50 years. He retired in 1985.

        In 1942, Mr. DeLotell was drafted into the Army and initially worked for Gen. Dwight Eisenhower in London. Later, he was transferred to Gen. George Patton's 3rd Army, where he worked with a unit that taught how to decode enemy transmissions.

        Mr. DeLotell received the Certificate of Merit following the war and was recognized by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council for his participation in the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp.

        He was a member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus, and he was a Kentucky Colonel.

        Survivors include: his wife of 58 years, Mary Margaret Everhard DeLotell; three daughters, Rainey DeLotell of Edgewood, Donna Miley of Hamilton and Denise Fornshell of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Don DeLotell of Mason; a sister, Ruth Spencer of Madisonville; and eight grandchildren.

        Visitation: 4-7 p.m. today at Geo. H. Rohde and Son Funeral Home, 3183 Linwood Ave., Mount Lookout. Mass of Christian burial: 10 a.m. Wednesday, St. Rose Church, 2501 Eastern Ave., East End. Entombment: St. Mary Cemetery mausoleum, Fort Mitchell.
