Site chosen for 2 schools
Lebanon picks Drake Rd.

LEBANON The new Lebanon High School and a new Bowman Elementary School will be built on 84 acres on Drake Road, north of the Miller Road bypass.
An alternative site for the high school was on 40 acres of land near the existing high school on Ohio 48.Ù If the community had chosen the 40-acre site, it would have had only enough land for the high school, so the elementary school would have been built at another location.
Superintendent Bill Sears said the community consensus preference was the Drake Road property because it had enough land for both schools.Ù
The school district sought comment at a community forum and public tour of the site, and in a telephone survey, conducted by Strategic Visioning Inc.
Mr. Sears said the Drake Road property was bought last summer for about $1.4 million from the Ken Bowman family of Lebanon. The superintendent said the district was able to get a good purchase price for the property, with the provision that the school would be named after the family.
Plans call for the new high school to accommodate 1,400 students (current enrollment is 1,175), expandable to 1,600 students. The elementary school will be built to accommodate 1,000 students.
Some reconfigurations of the existing schools are possible as the district looks ahead to continued growth.
Projected cost for the new high school is $32 million and it will be designed by architects from the firm SFA-BHOP. About $14.7 million is earmarked for the elementary school, which will be designed by the firm Voorhis, Sloan, Crossland and Welch.
Ù The money for both schools has been secured through a bond issue.
The target date for completion is August 2004 for both schools.
