LAHAINA, Hawaii — The pile of players in the corner of the court looked like a March moment rather than one in mid-November.

But Ball State earned the right to celebrate after beating No. 4 Kansas 93-91 Monday in the opening round of the Maui Invitational.

The Cardinals were down six points with just under three minutes to play and their best player had fouled out. Still, the backcourt of Patrick Jackson and Chris Williams came up with huge plays in the final minute for the upset.

“I'm not embarrassed to say that's a program we want to emulate,” second-year Ball State coach Tim Buckley said. “But this can't make our season. We have to build on this.”

The win moved the Cardinals on to today's semifinals against the winner of the game between No.3 UCLA and Houston.

The win was another blow to the preseason Top Ten. Five of those teams have now lost a game less than two weeks into the season.
